I'm So Excited...

... to tell you about Kimberly, our new sponsored child from El Salvador!

The Shane and Shane concert we recently attended ended with Shane B. telling us about World Vision and the child they have sponsored for the past ten years.  Matt and I used to sponsor a child named Alberth for several years, but he dropped out of the program a while ago.  Hearing about Shane and Bethany's experience pricked our hearts and made us realize how much we missed sponsoring a child!

I wanted to find a little girl with Rachel's exact birthday to make her feel like she has a special connection with this child.  I was thrilled to find out that you can search for children by birthday on World Vision's site!  A handful of sweet little girls came up that shared her birthday, but how would we choose?  Although it was difficult, when we saw that Kimberly loves drawing and dolls, we knew that she was the little girl for our family!  Rachel absolutely loves these things too, so it's a perfect match!  I'm so glad that Rachel is old enough to help us write letters (and draw pictures!) and to understand why we want to help Kimberly.  That because of Christ's love for us, we can't help but share our love and the gifts He's so graciously given us with those in need.  It's a wonderful opportunity to pray for Kimberly and to share Jesus with her as we get to know her and correspond with her.  It's so strange, but I already feel connected to this sweet girl!  I wish I could go down to El Salvador right now and give her a hug... :)  Perhaps one day I will.

When Abby and Timmy get a little older, I would love for them to have their own sponsored children as well.  It's one small way to put our faith into action and be the hands and feet of Jesus.  Would you consider sponsoring a child too?

Matthew 25:35-40
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

The Myth of the Genderless Baby by Albert Mohler

Excerpt: The controversy surrounding Storm is a sign of our times. Our rebellion against the Creator has now reached the point that we will deny the fact that our identity is not just our own personal project, but is first of all established in the Creator’s intention — and part of that intention is the fact that we are male or female.

Why the Same-Sex Marriage Experiment Will Not Work by Jim Daly
Excerpt: I am, naturally, personally opposed to the legalization of same-sex marriage for the simple but profound reason that it violates and contradicts the sacred text of the Bible, which I believe to be true and inspired. But on what basis should I expect people who don’t believe as I do to likewise oppose same-sex marriage?  On the basis of logic, reason, common sense and the fact that preservation of traditional marriage is in the best interest of the common good, as evidenced by any number of factors, including reams of social science data and thousands of years of history.

Designer Babies, Designer God by Missy @ It's Almost Naptime
Excerpt: As the field of genetics and prenatal testing continues, it won't be long before it is routine to abort babies for reasons of eye color or height. "Tsk tsk, Missy," you say. "No one will do that."  To which I will reply: untold millions of babies have been aborted for much lesser reasons.

Guess Who We Saw?

Woot!  We saw Shane & Shane in concert again this year!  If you've never heard of them, check them out.  You will love them!  My favorite album is Clean, but they're coming out with a new album soon too.

The picture makes me laugh because my Matt looks like he should be one of the Shanes with his hat and matching red striped shirt and all. :)

The rest of the lovely people in the photo were people from our church that we randomly found at the concert which was an hour away.  It made it a lot more fun to find people that we knew there!

At the concert, Shane B. inspired us to do something that I'm going to tell you about in another blog post soon.  We're very excited about it!

Happy 11 Months Old Little Man!

What a joy filled 11 months it has been since Timmy joined our family!  He is the sweetest, easiest, happiest little boy. :)  I could have ten more babies like him.  I'm so proud to be his Mama.

on the move...

In his pack n' play saying "Get me outta here Mom!"

P.S. I really do clothe my baby... I promise. :)  I just can't resist baby chubba rolls.

Macro Photography - Kenko Extension Tubes

I've always been fascinated by macro photography.  I consider it a form of worship because it makes me marvel at the genius and creativity of God.  What a Creator!  Even the miniature world, which often goes unnoticed, is full of beauty and amazingly intricate designs.

I haven't explored macro photography until now because I didn't have a macro lens and I didn't want to spend $1,000 to purchase one.  So I did a little research and discovered a relatively inexpensive way to convert any lens into a macro lens.  Have you ever heard of Kenko extension tubes?
Kenko DG Auto Extension Tube Set for the Nikon AF Mount.
Less than $200 bought me a set of 3 tubes.  These are hollow tubes that sit in between your camera and your lens.  They push your lens further out away from your camera, which decreases the minimum focusing distance of your lens.  If I just lost you, let me explain.  Every lens has a minimum focusing distance, which is the shortest distance at which a lens can focus.  For example, if I'm using my 50mm 1.8 lens, I need to be at least 18 inches away from my subject/object in order for the camera to achieve focus.  Placing an extension tube between the camera and the lens allows me to get in much closer to my subject.  I can now be a couple inches away and achieve focus, which gives my ordinary lens the ability to shoot like a macro lens!

The extension tubes can also be stacked, meaning that I can put more than one tube on my camera at a time.  This gives you a total of seven possible combinations.

I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with macro photography.  I've been taken by surprise about how difficult it is though!  I'm such a beginner at this, so please bear with me!  As I begin to figure a few things out, I'll share some tips along the way.  And if you have any advice for me, please share!  Below are the first images that I've taken.  Most of them were shot with my 35mm 1.8 lens and the 12mm extension tube (the skinniest tube pictured above).

An Update: Four Things

It's been a while, so here are a few things that have been going on over here in the past few weeks!  I had intended to write TEN things, but I set a blogging time limit and ran out of time. :)

1. SPIRITUAL MATTERS
The Lord has blessed me with a period of time over the last several weeks where fellowship with Him has been extra sweet.  The books of I John and Luke have completely spun me around, flipped me over, and challenged me in more than a million ways.  They've required me to take a hard look at what it looks like to be a true believer.  What is the cost of discipleship and really following Jesus?  Because I have to be honest with you... it's not about our best life now.  And in what ways has the American way of life slipped into my thinking? into my expectations? into the things I long for and consider non-negotiables?  Loosen my grip oh Lord so that, if asked, I could walk away from everything I own to follow You.

These books have also impacted me incredibly in the last few weeks:
And on YouTube, I can't get enough of Francis Chan and Paul Washer sermons.

2. HOMESCHOOLING
We're taking a lighter, more summery approach to homeschooling.  I had originally planned to go full speed ahead all summer long, but I hadn't considered that almost everyone else is off for the summer.  Many of the other Moms and kids are available for play dates, so we're taking opportunities to connect with more families and just have fun.  By the way, we are still loving Heart of Dakota's amazingly wonderful curriculum.  If you're in search of a Christ-centered homeschooling curriculum, I would encourage you to consider HOD.  A few days ago, I read Rachel, my kindergartner, a story about how we can be reconciled to God.  These moments and opportunities to plant seeds in her little heart make all of the challenges of homeschooling worth it.

3. PHOTOGRAPHY
I recently did a family portrait session for my friend Erin and she blessed me with a gift card (thanks Erin!) to one of my favorite online photography stores: B&H Photo.  I purchased a set of Kenko extension tubes that will allow my current lenses to act like macro lenses!  I'm SO excited!  I want to be just like Thomas Shahan... except... I sort of scream and run away when I see bugs and spiders.  Hmm.  I'm going to have to work on that one... or maybe start with flowers. :)  But macro photography just makes me marvel at God and His creation and gives me so much more appreciation for the beauty and intricacies of what He has made.  Check out the spider below.  Actually, check out Thomas Shahan's entire photostream on Flickr.  It's creepy.  It's cool.  These insects are mind blowingly amazing and dare I say beautiful? (But I would still scream if I saw one in real life.)

4. Timmy is CRAWLING!  I'm so sad!  And busier than ever before as I chase him around to make sure he's not eating dirt or dog hair. *sigh*  I just love that little guy.  I promise to put up pictures of him soon.  His crawl is so cute.  He uses one knee and one foot... kind of skateboard style.  Oh I just love him.

Well friends, I hope you're all having a wonderful, blessed summer so far!
